More and more Muslims in Germany are choosing to undertake the pilgrimage to Makkah and Madinah without booking a conventional tour group. Organising your journey independently gives you complete flexibility over your schedule, saves money, and allows for a deeply personal spiritual rhythm. To ensure no administrative or logistical hurdles are overlooked along the way, this step-by-step guide walks you through every key milestone—from initial passport checks to your return home.

Short answer

Organising your own Umrah from Germany begins by verifying your passport validity and obtaining the Saudi tourist eVisa before booking flights and accommodation. Next, reserve your free Nusuk ritual permits, organise ground transfers such as the Haramain train, and prepare your Ihram essentials. Following this sequence prevents costly rebooking fees and ensures a seamless journey.

Designing your own pilgrimage has become significantly easier today thanks to modern digital processes. Even so, the project requires disciplined planning. Tackling steps in the wrong order—such as purchasing non-refundable flights before obtaining entry permits—risks unnecessary costs and stress. Work through the following points systematically to ensure a calm, well-structured, and spiritually fulfilling journey.

1. Check Passport Validity and Choose Travel Dates

Every journey begins with your identity document. To enter Saudi Arabia, your passport must be valid for at least six months from the planned date of entry. Check this requirement well in advance for every family member traveling with you, as renewing a German passport at your local Bürgeramt often takes several weeks.

When selecting your travel dates, consider weather conditions as well as seasonal peaks. The winter months from November to February offer pleasant temperatures for outdoor rituals. During the holy month of Ramadan, the spiritual atmosphere is exceptionally intense, but visitor numbers and hotel rates rise substantially. Furthermore, take note of the strict restrictions during the annual Hajj season: although a valid tourist or visit visa can still be used to enter Saudi Arabia during that period, performing Umrah is officially prohibited by the authorities.

2. Secure Your Umrah Visa in Good Time

To embark on the pilgrimage, German citizens simply require the Saudi tourist eVisa, often referred to colloquially as the Umrah visa. A separate, specialised visa or an expensive agency service package is not required. The eVisa is valid for 365 days from the date of issue, permits multiple entries, and allows a cumulative stay of up to 90 days in total across all visits within that year.

To ensure an error-free application on the official government portal, Umrah Hilfe provides dedicated assistance. Umrah Hilfe is a specialized service provided by AZNA Marketing based in Frankfurt am Main (not a tour operator within the meaning of § 651a BGB). We submit and purchase your eVisa on your behalf directly via the official platform of the Saudi government. Pricing is fully transparent: it consists of the official government fee and our fixed service fee of €37.50 per person (no VAT charged under German small-business regulations).

The application process is simple: complete our online form and upload a sharp passport scan along with a frontal passport photo on a plain white background. You will then receive an invoice by email to settle exclusively via bank transfer, quoting your invoice number as the payment reference (we never send payment links). Once payment is received, processing is usually completed within 48 hours, and your visa is delivered directly as a PDF via email. The Saudi authorities decide on every approval.

3. Select Flight Routes and Arrival Airport

Once visa formalities are settled, turn your attention to booking flights. From German airports such as Frankfurt am Main, Munich, or Berlin, both direct connections and transit flights via Istanbul, Cairo, or the Gulf States are available.

A key strategic decision is choosing your initial arrival airport: should you land in Jeddah (JED) or directly in Madinah (MED)? Flying into Madinah allows you to arrive without being in the state of Ihram, acclimate calmly to the local climate, and visit the Prophet's Mosque first. If you fly directly to Jeddah, you will typically perform Umrah immediately upon arrival and must enter Ihram before crossing the Miqat boundary mid-flight. Flights can be booked flexibly through our verified partners and are never bundled with your visa.

4. Reserve Accommodations in Makkah and Madinah

Hotel location plays a pivotal role in your daily comfort. In Makkah, numerous hotels are situated directly around the Masjid al-Haram (for instance, inside the Abraj Al Bait complex), while more budget-friendly alternatives are located in districts such as Kudai, Aziziyah, or along Ibrahim Khalil Road, often providing shuttle bus services. Accommodations can be reserved through our verified partners independently of visa processing.

Before booking, inspect actual walking distances and local topography in addition to star ratings. Some streets feature steep inclines that can become exhausting after completing Tawaf and Sa'i. For deeper insights, consult our guide on Hotel distance to the Haram in Makkah. In Madinah, the terrain surrounding Al-Masjid an-Nabawi is largely flat, making properties situated 400 to 600 meters away easily accessible on foot.

5. Book Your Umrah Permit via the Nusuk App

Your tourist eVisa grants entry into Saudi Arabia, while on-site pilgrimage rituals require an official slot. To regulate pilgrim density inside the Grand Mosque, the Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah issues free permits. You reserve your Umrah permit independently via the official Nusuk app as soon as your visa is issued.

Through the Nusuk app, you also reserve your mandatory visiting appointment for the Rawdah Sharif (the Noble Garden) inside the Prophet's Mosque in Madinah. Because time slots for men and women are scheduled separately and are strictly capacity-controlled, booking promptly via the Ministry's Umrah permit portal or Nusuk app is recommended.

6. Organise Ground Transfers and Local Transport

Saudi Arabia offers a modern transport infrastructure. To travel between Makkah, Madinah, and Jeddah, take advantage of the Haramain High Speed Railway. This high-speed train covers the route between both holy cities in approximately two hours and twenty minutes. Book your train tickets online two to three weeks prior to departure, as popular daytime departures sell out quickly.

For local trips within the cities, licensed street taxis as well as ride-hailing apps like Uber or Careem work reliably. If flagging down a local taxi, ensure the meter is switched on or agree on a binding fare before departing.

7. Prepare Ihram, Packing List, and Rituals

When traveling independently, you carry full responsibility for executing rituals correctly according to the Sunnah. Familiarise yourself early on with reputable literature, lectures, and guides explaining each step of Tawaf, Sa'i, and Halq or Taqsir.

Pack practical essentials: men require two pieces of unstitched white Ihram garments (ideally made of absorbent cotton) and a secure money belt. Women should bring loose-fitting, opaque clothing made of breathable natural fabrics. Essential for everyone: fragrance-free soap and moisturisers suitable for the state of Ihram, comfortable walking shoes for outside prayer zones, a basic travel first-aid kit with painkillers, electrolytes, and throat lozenges, alongside a reliable power bank for your smartphone.

8. Budget Management and Emergency Preparedness

A self-organised trip offers significant savings, but it requires diligent budgeting across flights, hotels, transit, visa charges, and meals. Compare the advantages and disadvantages of independent travel versus organised groups in our overview Plan Umrah on your own or book a package tour, and review typical expenditures in our breakdown of the Cost of a self-organised Umrah.

Always carry essential travel documents—printed visa, passport photocopy, hotel reservations, and emergency contact details—both securely in cloud storage and as duplicate paper printouts. Keep abreast of current travel advisories published by the Federal Foreign Office. If you are accompanied by elderly relatives, plan additional support such as wheelchair assistance and step-free routes; practical advice is available in our guide Planning Umrah with parents.
