Planning an Umrah raises fundamental questions for many pilgrims from Germany. For years, booking through a traditional travel agency was the only established way to visit the holy sites in Makkah and Madinah. Today, thanks to simplified entry regulations and modern online platforms, more and more believers are choosing to arrange their pilgrimage entirely on their own. Both approaches have distinct advantages and typical hurdles. This guide provides an objective comparison of both travel options and helps you make the right decision for your personal circumstances and travel budget.

Short answer

A self-organised Umrah offers complete flexibility regarding travel dates, hotels, and daily prayer schedules, and is generally significantly cheaper outside peak holiday seasons. A package tour suits pilgrims who prefer structured group travel, on-site tour guides, and legal protection under German package travel law.

The decision between a package tour and individual travel planning largely depends on your personal priorities, travel experience, and schedule preferences. While a group offers structure and companionship, independent travel allows for a deeply personal rhythm for prayer and reflection.

1. Flexibility and Daily Routine on Site

A significant difference between both models lies in how you structure your daily routine in Saudi Arabia.

On a package tour, the schedule is usually tightly organised. The tour operator fixes flight times, bus transfers between Jeddah, Makkah, and Madinah, as well as dates for joint Ziyarat (visits to historical sites). For pilgrims who prefer not to make logistical decisions on site, this structure provides peace of mind. However, it also means that personal needs—such as staying longer in Masjid al-Haram after the Tahajjud prayer or taking spontaneous rest breaks—often have to take a back seat to the group schedule.

If you plan your trip yourself, you determine every step autonomously:

  • Free choice of travel duration: You decide flexibly whether to spend five days in Madinah and four days in Makkah, or adjust your itinerary spontaneously.
  • Hotel location of your choice: You choose your accommodation specifically based on proximity to the Haram, your budget, or accessibility requirements.
  • Prayer times as the focal point: You align meals and transfers precisely with your individual prayer and sleep schedule.

If you want to coordinate your travel components systematically, our Umrah self-planning checklist provides a reliable guide for chronological preparation.

2. Cost Comparison: What Do You Really Save by Organising It Yourself?

Organising your own trip is often considered the much cheaper option. In practice, this is frequently true, but it depends heavily on the time of booking and the season.

Tour operators purchase flight and hotel contingents in bulk. During peak periods, such as the last ten nights of Ramadan or over the New Year, package offers can sometimes remain competitive because operators rely on long-term reserved allotments. In most other travel months, however, individual booking is noticeably cheaper, as you do not have to pay agency margins, flat-rate bus charges, or mandatory meal packages.

When planning independently, you actively control your total expenditure:

  • Flights: By taking advantage of flexible departure airports in Germany (e.g. Frankfurt, Munich, Berlin, or Cologne) and comparing direct flights with connecting routes, you can often save several hundred euros per ticket.
  • Accommodation: Instead of being tied to a hotel chosen by an operator, you compare real-time daily rates on reputable platforms.
  • Meals and transport: Instead of paying for expensive full-board hotel packages, you dine at your own leisure and use modern local transport options such as the Haramain high-speed train or standard taxis.

A detailed breakdown of all individual expenses, from transfers to meals, can be found in our guide on the costs of a self-organised Umrah.

3. Visa and Official Permits Compared

In the past, performing Umrah was strictly tied to specialized agency packages. Today, German citizens and eligible travellers can perform Umrah easily with the standard Saudi tourist eVisa—no separate, expensive Umrah visa is required.

The eVisa terms are clearly defined:

  • Validity: Valid for 365 days from the date of issue.
  • Entries: Multiple-entry permission.
  • Duration of stay: Maximum 90 days total across all stays (not 90 days per entry).
  • Hajj season: The visa permits entry into Saudi Arabia during the Hajj period, but performing Umrah during Hajj is strictly prohibited by Saudi authorities.

For the actual ritual of Umrah, pilgrims only need to book an Umrah permit via the official Nusuk app. Details on rituals and permits can also be checked on the Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah information portal (see Hajj & Umrah Permit Application). No mandatory service package is required.

If you prefer not to complete the application process yourself, Umrah Hilfe (AZNA Marketing, Frankfurt am Main) can submit it on your behalf directly via the official Saudi government platform. We verify your passport (valid for at least 6 months upon entry) and photo (white background). The service fee is 37.50 EUR per person plus the official government fee, payable exclusively by standard bank transfer using your invoice number. Applications are typically processed within 48 hours after payment receipt; final approval rests with the Saudi immigration authorities. 4. Assembling Flights and Accommodation Yourself

With a package tour, you receive a pre-arranged flight ticket and hotel reservation. When planning independently, you book these components directly with the respective service providers. While this requires some research, it gives you full transparency over departure times, layovers, and room categories.

Umrah Hilfe is not a tour operator within the meaning of § 651a BGB and never bundles travel packages. We do not sell flight tickets or hotel allotments. Instead, we refer you to verified partners where you can safely book your individual components:

  • For flight connections, compare departure points, airlines, and layover times directly.
  • For hotels in Makkah and Madinah, choose accommodation based on verified guest reviews, accurate location maps, and flexible cancellation terms.

5. Spiritual Guidance and Leadership

A frequent argument in favour of a package tour is the presence of a tour guide or Imam who leads the group through the rituals, recites supplications, and delivers religious lectures. For first-time travellers or those feeling uncertain about their religious duties, this provides reassurance.

However, this religious knowledge can easily be acquired in advance today. The stages of Umrah—entering Ihram at the Miqat, Tawaf around the Kaaba, praying behind Maqam Ibrahim, drinking Zamzam water, Sa'i between Safa and Marwa, and the concluding haircut (Tahallul)—are clearly structured and well documented.

Many independent travellers report that performing the rituals on their own leads to deeper focus. Rather than having to keep track of a group leader in crowded areas, you can set your own pace, recite your personal Du'a with devotion, and immerse yourself in the spiritual atmosphere in your own time.

A factor not to be overlooked is the legal framework governing both types of travel:

  • Package tours under German law: If you book with a German tour operator, package travel legislation applies (§ 651a et seq. BGB). You receive a package travel certificate (Reisesicherungsschein) protecting against insolvency, and the operator is liable for the proper delivery of all booked services. If an internal transfer fails or the hotel does not match the description, the operator is your primary point of contact.
  • Individual component bookings: If you book your visa, flights, and hotels separately, you enter into distinct contracts with each respective provider (airlines, hotel platforms). In the event of flight delays, passenger rights apply; hotel cancellations are governed by the platform's booking policies. This requires greater personal responsibility, but protects you from inflated package markups.

7. Which Path Is Right for You?

To make the right choice, an honest assessment of your travel group is helpful:

A package tour is ideal for you if:

  • You are performing pilgrimage for the first time and want to avoid logistical mistakes.
  • Elderly family members are travelling who rely on continuous support and organised coaches.
  • You do not want to spend any time researching flights, train tickets, and accommodation.
  • You value fixed group structures and communal lectures.

A self-planned Umrah is ideal for you if:

  • You already have travel experience and are confident using digital tools (apps for navigation, hotel bookings, train tickets).
  • You want to align your travel dates and stay lengths precisely with annual leave or school holidays.
  • You place great value on personal spirituality and wish to control your own daily schedule.
  • You want to optimize your travel budget and avoid unnecessary surcharges.
