For pilgrims from Germany, travel planning usually starts at Frankfurt Airport (FRA), the country's largest hub with the most connections to Saudi Arabia. When booking, an essential strategic question arises: Should you land in Jeddah (JED) or directly in Madinah (MED)? Both options significantly impact how your first days unfold, when you enter Ihram, and the physical strain on your family. In this guide, you will learn which airport choice best suits your plans and how to organize local transfers smoothly.

Short answer

If you plan to perform Umrah immediately upon arrival, flying into Jeddah (JED) is the fastest route due to high flight frequency and the 54-minute Haramain train link to Makkah. If you want a relaxed arrival and plan to visit the Prophet's Mosque first, flying into Madinah (MED) eliminates the need to change into Ihram on the aircraft and avoids a long overland transfer after landing.

When planning your Umrah independently, choosing the right destination airport largely determines how relaxed your first few days in the Kingdom will be. Both cities have modern international terminals, yet they cater to completely different travel itineraries.

Flight Options from Frankfurt am Main at a Glance

From Frankfurt am Main, you can choose between non-stop flights and connecting routes. Saudia offers regular direct flights to Jeddah, while direct flights to Madinah vary seasonally or operate less frequently. Numerous airlines such as Turkish Airlines, Qatar Airways, Emirates, Gulf Air, EgyptAir, or Royal Jordanian offer connecting flights to both airports.

When selecting a connecting flight, make sure to allow sufficient buffer time to safeguard both connecting flights and checked luggage. You can find detailed recommendations in our guide on the ideal Umrah flight layover time.

Landing in Jeddah: The Direct Route to Makkah

King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah is located approximately 85 to 100 kilometers from Makkah. If your primary goal is to perform Umrah immediately upon arrival, Jeddah is the most logical destination airport.

Advantages of the Jeddah Route

* Higher flight frequency: Frankfurt offers the widest selection of flights, departure times, and airlines to Jeddah.

* Shorter distance to Makkah: Depending on your mode of transport, you can reach the holy city of Makkah from Jeddah Airport within 35 to 90 minutes.

* Direct rail connection: Terminal 1 features an integrated Haramain High Speed Railway station, connecting you directly to Makkah in just under 54 minutes.

The Challenge: Entering Ihram on the Plane

The critical factor when flying to Jeddah is the Miqat. When arriving from Europe, you cross the Miqat (usually Al-Juhfah / Rabigh) approximately 30 to 45 minutes before landing while still airborne. This means you must enter the state of Ihram before departing Frankfurt or, at the latest, during the flight prior to crossing this boundary. For families with small children or elderly travelers, changing in cramped airplane lavatories can be strenuous.

Landing in Madinah: A Relaxed Arrival

Prince Mohammad Bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Madinah is located northeast of the city center. From there, you can reach the Prophet's Mosque (Al-Masjid an-Nabawi) and surrounding accommodations in about 20 to 30 minutes by road.

Advantages of the Madinah Route

* No Ihram on the plane: Because you visit Madinah first, you travel in regular everyday clothes. You do not need to assume Ihram or make your Umrah intention while on the aircraft.

* Physical recovery: After your flight from Germany, you can acclimatize, rest, and visit the Prophet's Mosque before commencing the pilgrimage rites.

* Stress-free start to Ihram: When traveling onward from Madinah to Makkah later in your journey, you can enter Ihram comfortably at the Miqat mosque, Dhul Hulaifah (Abyar Ali).

Disadvantages of Flights to Madinah

From Frankfurt, non-stop options to Madinah are less frequent than to Jeddah. Choosing Madinah therefore more frequently involves a layover, such as in Istanbul, Doha, or Cairo. Depending on seasonal demand, ticket prices can also run slightly higher.

Open-Jaw Flights: Inbound to Madinah, Outbound from Jeddah

One of the most practical and energy-saving routes is the open-jaw flight: booking Frankfurt–Madinah on the outbound leg and Jeddah–Frankfurt on the return.

Why This Combination Is Often the Best Solution

With this option, you avoid traveling the same route twice:

  1. You land in Madinah, check into your hotel without the physical constraints of Ihram, and spend your first days there.
  2. You take the Haramain High Speed Train to Makkah in about 2 hours and 20 minutes, entering Ihram at Dhul Hulaifah beforehand.
  3. You perform Umrah and spend the rest of your time in Makkah. When choosing your accommodation, consider walking distances and accessibility; our guide on Makkah hotel distance to the Haram provides clear orientation.
  4. After your farewell Tawaf, you travel directly to Jeddah Airport on your departure day and fly back to Frankfurt.

Transfer from Jeddah to Makkah Compared

If you decide to land in Jeddah, several transportation options are available:

* Haramain High Speed Railway: The fastest and most comfortable connection. The train station is located directly inside Terminal 1. Trains operate multiple times daily, and tickets should be booked in advance.

* Official airport taxis and ride-hailing apps: Taxis operate 24/7. Apps such as Uber and Careem offer upfront pricing and trackable routing.

* Private transfers: For larger families, pre-booking a private van via verified local transport operators provides seamless door-to-door transit.

After landing in Jeddah, allow time for immigration, baggage claim, and customs. We have compiled comprehensive preparation steps in our guide to planning Umrah independently.

Entry Requirements and Preparation in Germany

Whichever flight route you choose, entry requirements for travelers from Germany are identical at both airports. You need a passport valid for at least six months from your date of entry, as well as a valid visa for Saudi Arabia.

The regular Saudi tourist eVisa is completely sufficient to perform Umrah; no separate "Umrah visa" or bundled agency package is required. The eVisa is valid for 365 days from issue, permits multiple entries, and allows stays of up to 90 days in total. The Umrah permit itself is obtained free of charge via the official Nusuk platform. Before departing, check current travel advisories on the website of the Auswärtiges Amt.
